Reykjavik

History and Culture

Reykjavik is a city steeped in History and Culture. With a myriad of museums, art galleries and music venues there is something to suit all visitors. Much of the culture of the city centres around the history of Iceland and the Viking Sagas. Museums to consider include the National Museum, the Reykjavik Settlement Exhibition and the Culture House. Nightlife and live music are a large part of Reykjavik’s appeal and host an eclectic mix of music styles and tastes. There are many music festivals during the summer months and many bars and clubs with organised live music. Another very social part of the city’s personality are the geothermal pools and spas. These are very popular with both the locals and visitors alike. With a population of around 180,000, most of the some 280,000 Icelanders live within the capital and surrounding area.

Gourmet Iceland

Eating out in Iceland offers a vast array of different options. As is often the case in Iceland the cuisine has evolved due to an ability to combine, embrace and adapt foreign tastes whilst utilising pure Icelandic ingredients. There is an abundance of extremely high quality fresh seafood at restaurants such as the cutting edge Seafood Cellar as well as high quality lamb and game at the Borg Hotel Brasserie. In addition to Icelandic cuisine there is an abundance of International restaurants to choose from, try Prima Vera for classic Italian.

Accommodation

Reykjavik offers an extensive range of luxury hotels and Icelanders are renowned for their warm hospitality and attentive service (service and VAT are invariably included). Most accommodation is within easy reach of the attractions and city centre and taxis are readily available. For traditional Icelandic hospitality (and the finest range of malt whiskies in Reykvivik) try the Holt Hotel, Nordica Hotel is well positioned and offers a quality service on all fronts or for a cutting edge, Icelandic designer experience, Hotel 101 is fantastic.
