Tackle Disinfection Procedures:
Iceland has in place a policy to protect it's lake and rivers from disease such as Gyrodactylus Salaris. Anglers travelling to Iceland from foreign origins must have their tackle and waders thoroughly sterilized before arrival in Iceland. At least 2% formaldehyde or Virkon S solution should be used to carry this out and must be performed by a Vet. Your Vet must sign an inventory of what has been sterilized and this must be presented to Customs on request in Keflavik airport. The most important items to be treated are: rods, reel/line, waders and flies. (Care should be taken not to allow too strong a solution to be used on flies as they may deteriorate.)
The sterilization of tackle can be carried out by Customs Staff at Keflavik Airport. Their office can be found to the rear of baggage reclaim. Bear in mind the charge for this is considerably higher than the likely charge from your local vet and will likely impede your quick passage to the river and thus your fishing time. We suggest you carry out all Tackle Disinfection at home prior to travel.
