Vesturdalsa: Fishing

With long meadows reaching up from the sea towards Vesturdalsa's upper crags and gorge pools, the variety of this river is a fascination of its own to the visiting fly fisher. A salmon river in miniature, this productive Icelandic gem provides visual and exciting sport over many pools and runs. Some of the best fishing is to be had following long walks deep into the wilderness where two falls finally bar the Salmons path. Until recently the river was only fished by the owner's friends and family keeping the catch statistics quite low. There is a fish counter on the river showing that around 400 salmon enter the system each season and around 20% of these are multi sea winter fish. There have been plenty of 15lb fish caught in recent years including a few that exceeded 20lb.
