25th January 2012: Continued Snow and Heavy Floods.
We received amazing images of flood water and heavy ice from the Grimsa river. It's often said that Grimsa does not suffer the low water of other Icelandic rivers but this is another level of high water. With huge chunks of ice and strong flow of flood water there will surely be some interesting variety in the gravel banked pools in the upper river. Each year the river's natural course is altered as gravel banks are shifted by winter conditions. This can mean that a pool that performs amazingly one summer canloose it's holding points the next. This makes it an interesting time at the opening of the season as nothing can be relied upon to produce and every part of every pool must be maticulously fished locating the holding fish and hoping to connect. Theforecast is bleak for Icelanders going about their every day existence as snow is forecast most days this week but for us the expectant anglers and guides this brings with it great anticipation of a stable water season in Iceland.

9th January 2012: Heavy Snow in Iceland.
Whilst the UK weather has returned to it's previous mild for, Iceland is still experiencing heavy snow and cold climates. This is good news for Salmon Fishers heading to Iceland this season. Things change but a good cold winter means more reliable water levels come the warmer months of summer and this in turn means rivers will fish more reliably through the season. It also means a good level for the early season fish to push up nto the upper beats allowing all pools to fish form an early start.
There have been positive findings on juvenile numbers from the Fisheries Board in North East Iceland also which is a good indicator for all rivers for 2012. Lets hope for a good number of returning fish as well as stable water.
8th December 2011: Secure your fishing in iceland and have a relaxing Christmas....
Many thanks to those adventurous fly fishers who have already secured their Icelandic fishing trip during the 2012 summer months. It promises to be a very interesting year ahead for so many reasons. To mention but a couple:
1. With snow falling in the mountains already we hope for a prolonged spell of cold weather and deep deposits on the hills that will serve the rivers well into July.
2. Many rivers are due to see their first full summer's results from improved spawning and consequent higher juvenile densities. This has come about with the switch to fly only or well practiced catch and release some four, five or six years ago resulting in higher numbers of adult fish surviving and spawning and one cycle later......well, we shall see!!!
21st October 2011: The time to book your 2012 Icelandic Adventure is NOW!

1st September 2011: Breaking News
Svalbardsa breaks it all time catch record.......yes this magical 3 rod river has sailed past its all time record and just seems to keep improving year on year.
Please keep your eyes on this page as we will shortly be posting the seasons catch stats for all Fly Fish Iceland's favourite rivers and some notable statistics for other top Icelandic salmon rivers. there will also be some exciting news and new opportunities for single fishers, pairs and teams of friends or groups looking for an exceptional salmon fishing experience in Iceland!
Reports Early August 2011:
Hafralonsa:
In great shape with lots of water, at points almost too much, Hafralonsa has had a great season so far. large fish above 80cm are plentiful with the rods catching really good numbers of fish in the lower half of the river, below the Gusti Falls. the GUIDELINE staff team did very well in the teens of July, their specialist equipment suiting the Hafralonsa pools and the high water conditions perfectly resulting in many stories of fish landed and a fair few of big fish lost!
The Fly Fish Iceland guests fishing this week (24-30 July) have also had great fishing. Jacques, a former leaseholder of Hafralonsa and great fishing character is fishing with friends from Yokanga Peter and Joe and sharing the river they have landed some excellent fish to over 15lbs. Peter landing 5 fish in a single session from the incomparably beautiful Kverka, the small tributary to Hafralonsa that hold BIG fish!
We have two more groups through the prime weeks, our last fishers leaving on the 11th August. we are in no doubt that fishing these prime weeks they will have a great time and enjoy this spectacular river.
with improving catches in the past three years, 2011 so far would suggest that the 6 rod Hafralonsa is continuing on the up on a big way!
Midfjardara:
I was lucky enough to join our team on Midfjardara fishing 12-15 July. whilst less volume f fish in than during the 2010 record season, the runs were thickening every day and all rods had multiple encounters with fish over the 15lb weight. John, Richard, Ben, Paul and Richard P all enjoyed the river with its huge variety and the rotation between Midfjardara proper (the lowest section) and the Vestura, Austura and Nupsa tributaries made for very interesting and varied fishing. Rabbi was kind enough to spend time and show me the different sections in detail, in fact he even found a side channel on the lower river not more than 2m wide and .5m deep that was holding a dozen salmon 7-12lbs that we sight cast to at a range of 15ft.....needless to say i overcast and got an attack from a fish at the back of the pod that swam over the heads of the ones infront and spooked the whole pod! ......what a great river!
Svalbardsa:
I will keep this short and sweet as those that know, know and there are so many fishing waiting to fish this river there is little point in dwelling on it to long......last group of 3 rods landed 80 salmon (only 15 of them grilse) in 4 days. what a gem.
Laxa in Kjos:
The on off love affair that ever fisher who has ever spent time at Laxa in Kjos continues. This tranquil and stunningly beautiful rural valley combined with top class lodge, staff and catering match the intimate river and its tributary, Bugda, perfectly. The problem is the seemingly endless low water throughout the best July periods. The salmon and sea trout still run and they still take but fishers are down to 6-8lb line and micro hitches and flies.
The old statement rings true - if you can fish Kjos successfully you have mastered the Icelandic techniques and will make 'easy work' of any other river! we have several groups during the past 3 weeks, all of whom had highlights and plenty of Marialax ceremonies performed for those catching their first salmon....hosted in the lodge by Chefs Kjartan and Anna who have excelled once again this year.
Grimsa:
Grimsa has held a very steady statistic for this season again, the fish arriving slightly late but ever dependable fishing continues now into early August with lots of fresh fish still running and the comfort of a great lodge and great Chef in Jon Kristin to return to after the fishing session ends......not too much to add other than reliable, productive, fun, great comfort, food and service. Grimsa is a top class experience!
Langa:
Although a little slow in early July as the fish were fairly late to arrive, Langa has kept perfect water throughout the season. the additional boards in the dam at Langavatn have been an added and unrequired security measure. fish have poured into Langa from the late tens of July and continue to do so now. too many good stories to detail but Charles broke his one day catch record with 8 salmon landed and other tussles besides, Christina landed her Marialax - one of several she landed in just two days under the watchful eye of Head of Fishing (and all round good guy) Oli Finbogson.....and that was the first day fly fishing for her too!
Hofsa & Sunnudalsa:
Hofsa is yet to really pick up, it seems like reasonable numbers of fish are in the river as of early August but they are not taking well. by contrast, Sunnudalsa is fishing very well and providing up to 30 fish to the three rods over 4/6 days periods.
Sela:
Fishing very well indeed. Large numbers being landed daily, as yet mostly below the Middle Foss but the upper river will kick in very well shortly.
More reports to come shortly........
Iceland has had a great start to the season with a return to cooler weather to begin the season. The last 4-5 years has seen traditionally cool springs turn to hot draughts through May and early June. This year things are back to expectation and cold weather prevails over much of Iceland. All rivers are showing good opening catches and plenty of snow still in the hills meaning water levels should be maintained throughout the months of June and July and, if the weather stays cool and wet, well into August. This cooler weather has not detered the fish however as all rivers are showing early season promise.
Hafralonsa:
Hafralonsa has opened with 10 fish in the opening day to only 4 rods. They were all good strong fish between 80-90cm. This bodes well for the prime of the season.
Midfjardara:
Midfjardara opened 2.5 days ago and has already recorded a total of 30 fish to 6 rods. Unseasonable cold still the fish have been between 80-90cm also. (Contact us for the last few remaining rods 12-15 July on this magica, prolific river.)
Laxa in Kjos:
Kjos opened with 13 fish to 6 rods for the first few sessions on the river with good numbers of fish moving into the river all the time. - The current team in Kjos had a tough first day due to strong cold winds from the North but a few first Salmon have now been achieved and the fish are back on the take. Reports in of good numbers of fish running in on the tide this morning and are filling Kvislafoss and Laxfoss. On top of this there have been fish seen up above Polkafoss and a fish landed in Skuggi (the top pool). The water levels are still very good and the weather systems in Iceland all point to a very different season than the last few years.
Grimsa:
Opening on Grimsa had seen 9 fish for the first few hours of opening. We will update these details as they, and others, come in.
All in all a wonderful way to start the season especially with plenty of snow still in the hills and fish running in hard despite cooler weather than we have seen in recent years. With such a potentially successful season on our hands you'd be well advised to contact us for some last minute rods.
